Seoul National University College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced that Professor Seung-Ki Sul of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering was awarded the William E. Newell Power Electronics Awards-Technical Field Award from 2017 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers(IEEE)
Professor Seung-Ki Sul was selected as the winner of the award for his achievement in sensorless control of rotating electric devices.
The Technical Field Award is awarded to IEEE scholarship members who have made academic contributions or have great leadership in a particular field among 32 different technical fields. This award is regarded as one of the most prestigious award in the world in the field of electronics. Professor Sul became the third prize winner in Korea. Chang-gyu Hwang, former president of Samsung Electronics, and Yong-kyung Lee, former president of KT, won the technical field award in semiconductor field in 2006 and in optical communication field in 2007, respectively.
Since Professor Sul became a professor of Seoul National University in 1991, he has been working on the development of competitive technologies in the world market by successfully carrying out many industry-university cooperation research projects based on power electronics technology. In particular, he had been developing electronic energy saving technologies and developed energy-saving type elevator technology, As a result, the energy that are wasted in the elevator was dramatically reduced.
Meanwhile, the IEEE technology awards ceremony was held at the IEEE Conversion Congress & Expo in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 5.
