Seoul National University announced on 19th that Professor Kyung-Woo Lee of Department of Materials Science Engineering (Education Award), Professor Maenghyo Cho of Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Professor Youngjune Park of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Industry-University Cooperation Award) were selected as ‘2017 Great Engineering Professor Awards’.

‘Great Engineering Professor Awards’ was established in July 1992 with the aid of 15th alumni of the College of Engineering in order to promote the research activities of professors at Seoul National University and contribute to the advancement of industrial technology.

The education award is awarded to professor who has devoted to education in creative and progressive way. The research award is for a professor who has achieved outstanding academic results and the industry-university cooperation award is for a professor who have made significant contributions to the industrial technology development.

Professor Kyung-woo Lee of Department of Materials Science and Engineering, who is a winner of the education award, has continued to develop courses that reflect the recent research results of the materials science. In addition, he continuously make efforts on increasing the participation of students in the lectures by applying the active learning educational method to the major subject. Along with his direct efforts for the lectures, he also have devoted himself to the overall development of engineering education by actively participating in the Korean Society for Engineering Education and Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea. Thanks to his efforts, Professor Lee won the Seoul National University Education Award in 2006 and the Songyeop Han Engineering Education Award in 2016.

The research award winner, Professor Maenghyo Cho of Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has contributed to human resource development and academic development through educational and academic activities in the field of solid and structural mechanics. During the past 18 years, 31 Master and 30 Ph.D. students has graduated from his laboratory. In addition, Professor Cho has pioneered the field of multi-scale computational mechanics through national research projects. He has published about 210 papers in renowned international journals. Thanks to his great academic achievements, he has been awarded the 'Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers Award,' '100 Best in Science and Technology,' and 'Science and Technology Award in the Month.'

Professor Youngjune Park of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, who is winner of industry-university cooperation award, has endeavored to make platform for industrialization of the integrated technology of university while he has worked as a director of the Inter-University Semiconductor Research Center and as the director of the NANO System Institute. In particular, the 'Blue Chip' project, which was led by Professor Park when he worked as a director of Hynix Semiconductor Memory Research, played a crucial role in SK Hynix becoming the world's second largest semiconductor company. In addition, the 'charge pump circuit without output loss' developed by Professor Park has been used in more than 70% in NAND flash memory chips around the world. The physical electronics laboratory, which Professor Park has operated for 30 years with Professor Min Hong-shik, has contributed a lot to the Korea becoming the world best in semiconductor industry.

Meanwhile, the award ceremony for the ‘2017 Great Engineering Professors Awards’ was held at the Engineer House Auditorium on October 18th.
