Seoul National University College of Engineering (Dean, Kookheon Char) conducted a 'Rooftop Garden Kimchi-making Festival' from November 17 (Fri) to 18 (Sat) with cabbage grown in a concave rooftop garden that was built by Professor Mooyoung Han.
30 foreign students, 30 residents from Gwanak-gu, and 20 faculty members and students participated the event. They donated over 300 kimchi to foreign students at Seoul National University and the poor neighborhood of Gwanak-gu.
Seoul National University College of Engineering built concave rainwater garden at the rooftop of the building 35, where department of civil and environmental engineering located, and opened it to local residents and students. The rooftop was appreciated as a good place to strengthen the bonds between the university and the local community while cultivating.
Dean Char said, “This event represents a great model of engineering as we made kimchi using rainwater together with students who are not familiar with agriculture and local residents who don’t have enough places for cultivating crops.”
Professor Han Moo-young said, "Concave rainwater garden could reduce the electricity cost on the top floor and could prevent floods. Furthermore, crops can grow well with the rainwater. If concave rainwater gardens are built in rooftops of many government-owned building, local residents center, library and school, it would become a social place. “
