On 21st, SNU College of Engineering (Dean Cha Kook-Heon) has announced that 4 students from SNU received the 2nd Next-generation Engineering Leader Award awarded by National Academy of Engineering of Korea.

National Academy of Engineering of Korea selected 3 winners each for ‘entrepreneurship field’ and ‘leadership field’, from 34 undergraduates and graduates recommended by the members and the professors of each College of Engineering. The entrepreneurship field was evaluated based on whether the candidate has contributed to social development through original inventions and technology start-ups, and the leadership field was evaluated based on whether the candidate has expanded the base of engineering technology and contributed to social change.

Kim Ji-Ye (doctoral program) of Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering has won the first prize in Leadership field. Researcher Kim has been acknowledged for contributing to the environmental improvement in developing countries by developing and distributing electrochemical drinking water disinfection equipment, non-motorized water purification technology, and modular devices for mineral wastewater treatment with appropriate technologies considering the regional environment and characteristics of developing countries.

Kim has contributed to improving the drinking water environment in Cambodia and Myanmar, starting with the Philippines in 2013, and has established SEEDs (Social Even-handed Engineers and Designers) team in 2016, developing full-scale technology sharing activities.

Ham Seung-Woo of Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering was selected for the runner-up prize in acknowledgement of his various mentoring activities for the spread of engineering culture and engineering education. Lee Seung-Jae (Representative of interior information sharing platform Bucket Place) of Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering and Park Seung-Hwan (Representative of Tag Solution developing transparent LED display products) Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, promising young businessmen, received runner-up prize in entrepreneurship field.

Winners of the First Prize and Runner-up Prize will receive awards of 10 million won and 5 million won, respectively. The awarding ceremony will be held at the Westin Chosun Hotel in Sogong-dong, Jung-gu, Seoul on the 19th of next month.

The next-generation Engineering Leader Award is an award to encourage creative and challenging engineering students to become active engineers in solving social problems. It was first enacted by President Kwon Oh-joon (Chairman of POSCO) of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea with his private fortune.
