A research team led by Professor Jangwook Choi, developed a material for lithium-ion battery that can reduce charging time from an hour to 12 minutes

-Improved charging capacity by 45%, and charging speed is 5 times faster with ‘Graphene Ball’

Seoul National University College of Engineering (Dean, Kookheon Char) announced on 29th that a research team led by Professor Jangwook Choi of School of Chemical and Biological Engineering succeeded in developing a battery material ‘graphene ball’ that can make the charging speed 5 times faster than the conventional lithium ion battery by improving the charging capacity by 45%.

While it takes about an hour to fully charge conventional lithium-ion batteries even with fast-charge technology, graphene ball batteries can be fully charged within 12 minutes. In addition, stability can be maintained up to 60 degrees, which is the standard temperature required for electric vehicle batteries.

Graphene is a thin carbonaceous film stripped from graphite. Graphene is regarded as an ideal material for rapid charging since electrons could move 140 times faster within graphene compared to the silicon.

The research team found a mechanism for mass synthesis of graphene into a three-dimensional solid form like a popcorn using inexpensive material silica (SiO2), while they were struggling to found a way to use graphene for a battery.

When they tested the graphene ball as a positive electrode protective film and a negative electrode material of a lithium ion battery, charging capacity was increased and charging time was shortened. Furthermore, the material was stable even in high temperature.

Since its commercialization in 1991, lithium-ion batteries have been applied to mobile devices and electric vehicles. However, performance improvements such as increasing capacity and shortening charging time have reached the limit. Graphene is drawing attention as an innovative material to solve these limitations and to increase the performance of the battery.
