Seoul National University College of Engineering (Dean, Kookheon Char) announced on 12th that a paper written by Professor Yongil Kim of Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Yonghyun Kim was selected as a cover of Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters (GRSL), which is published by Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS), IEEE.
Professor Yongil Kim and Yonghyun Kim have developed the image fusion technology for satellite images with non-overlapping spectral response functions and the result was published in the paper titled 'Image Fusion of Spectral Non-overlapping Imagery Using SPCA and MTF-based Filters'.
Generally, it is known that fusion of general satellite images is possible only when spectral response functions overlap. Through the paper, they have newly developed spatial principal component analysis and applied it to image fusion to enable effective fusion of satellite images even when spectral response functions are not overlapped.
Professor Kim said, "Based on the research results of this paper, we plan to develop a fusion technique using various satellite images in the future. It is necessary to precede this remote exploration research to narrow the technology gap with major developed countries of remote sensing technology it is essential for effective use of KOMPSAT-1,3,3A and 5, which are launched by Korea.”
Meanwhile, IEEE is one of the world's leading experts in the fields of electricity, electronics, telecommunications and computers. GRSL, a journal published by the IEEE GRSS Division, is recognized as one of the world's top academic journals in the field of remote sensing using various data acquired by satellite and aircraft-based sensors.
