SNU Professor Yoon Sungroh Nominated as Recipient of Microsoft and IBM Research Grant

SNU Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Yoon Sungroh

SNU College of Engineering (Dean Cha Kook-Heon) has announced on 10th that Professor Yoon Sungroh of the department of electrical and computer engineering has been recognized for his research achievements on artificial intelligence (AI), particularly deep learning, and has been named the winner of Microsoft Collaborative Research Grant and IBM Faculty Award.

Research team led by Professor Yoon, in collaboration with Microsoft, has researched and developed an ‘Anti-spoofing’ technology that detects voice phishing and other recently rising social engineering frauds. Microsoft’s huge amount of aggregated data and research assets and SNU researchers’ innovative AI technologies are to synergize for the development of exceedingly advanced technologies.

In addition, Yoon’s research team has won the IBM Faculty Award at the International Conference on System Sciences held on 3rd of last month for developing a large-scale question-answering system and a deep learning based voice synthesis and conversion technology that changes user’s voice to a third party’s voice. These two technologies are essential for the effective use of the well-known AI service ‘IBM Watson’. This award has presented Yoon’s team with research grant from IBM.

A researcher from Yoon’s team, which has been consistently probing through big data based AI technology for the coming 4th Industrial Revolution, states, “It is a pleasure that the capability and competency of Korean researchers are being recognized by global companies like Microsoft and IBM” and promises to “strive for the development of even more advanced AI technologies.”
