SNU College of Engineering (Dean Cha Kook-Heon) announces that the EV-Battery Team (Department of Materials Science and Engineering Undergraduate Senior Choi Il-lok, Graduate Student Jung Sung-kyun) has been nominated as the winner of the Prime Minister’s Award at the national 2017 Capstone Design Fair. Awards ceremony and product showcase were held for two days from November 9th, 2017 during the ‘E2 FESTA 2017’ (Engineering Education Festa 2017) at the Kimdaejung Convention Center in Gwangju.

This festival, hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and co-supervised by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology and Engineering Education Innovation Centers, aimed to rear future talents needed in the industrial field by renovating engineering education.

The EV-Battery Team has received spotlight for the development of ‘nano-composite’ cathode material for secondary batteries at SNU Department of Materials Science and Engineering Professor Kang Kisuk’s lab since 2016.

By creating a ‘nano-composite’ cathode material that involves only light mixtures unlike the current compound form, the team has significantly raised the energy density of the battery. In addition, the team has discovered a factor, the binding energy, that influences energy efficiency; It is by the adjustment of this factor that the team has built a highly-efficient secondary battery and ultimately been nominated for the award.

Meanwhile, EV-Battery Team’s work has received the title of ‘Top Project’ at the annual SNU College of Engineering’s Creativity Design Fair held every fall sponsored by the DB KimJunKi Foundation, which served as the preliminary round prior to the actual festival.
