SNU College of Engineering announces on 5th that Professor Han Seungwu and Professor Watanabe from the two departments of materials engineering of SNU and University of Tokyo (UTokyo) respectively will conduct “joint and simultaneous” video lectures. This is the first case in Korea.
SNU College of Engineering and UTokyo have exchanged video lectures since 2007. The receiving college designates a counterpart professor so that students who complete the online course can earn their credits. Until now, SNU has provided 27 lectures while UTokyo has provided 11 lectures.
The new international video lecture involves a team of one SNU professor and one UTokyo professor to collectively conduct lectures for a single course that students from both universities enrolled in. This so-called “Team Teaching” lecture usually occurs within a single university. Thus, this will be the first case where a joint video lecture with a foreign university, where students from both schools take the class simultaneously, is conducted.
Professor Han and Professor Watanabe are planning to run a joint-lecture for graduate students on computational materials science, specifically simulation. This idea of running a lecture together has come up whilst a discussion since Han and Watanabe started their joint research a year ago.
Contents of the lecture focuses on each professor’s specific field of major. Professor Han is in charge of explaining the defect of semiconductor materials and Professor Watanabe is responsible for introducing simulation methods for nanomaterials. This lecture has not only appealed to graduate students from the Department of Materials Engineering, but has also received attention from those of the departments of mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, etc.
SNU College of Engineering Dean Cha Kook-Heon states, “Although there are many Asian universities that are placed high on the QS rankings, among these leading Asian universities, it is definitely only SNU and UTokyo that have such rich history and background. It is this accumulated tradition that allow both universities to have exceptional depth and potential in learning that newborn universities cannot easily catch up with. This joint-lecture is also meaningful in that it is an exchange between two universities that outstand in all fields.”
