SNU College of Engineering (Dean Cha Kook-Heon) announces that Team SNU (Department of Computer Science and Engineering Park Sang Woo, Park Sung Gwan, and Park Bom Soo) has won the medal for two consecutive years at the 2018 International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC), which was held at Peking University from April 15th to 20th.

Team SNU has ranked overall 5th out of the 140 university teams to earn the silver medal. This is the team’s second medal after the gold medal from last year. The team has received $6000 (approximately 630 Million Korean Won) and the ticket to participate at next year’s contest.

Professor Yeom Heon Young who led the team has received the ICPC Foundation Coach Award. He has been acknowledged for sending the team five times into finals.

Team SNU has solved 7 out of 11 problems to be placed fifth. Moscow State University has solved 9; Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, Peking University, and Tokyo University have solved 8 each.

The team, which started in lead, received additional award for being the first to solve the first two problems, but later fell astern. The first to fourth places are awarded gold while fifth to eighth places are awarded silver. Thus, the team missed the gold medal by a close call.

Meanwhile, the ICPC, first established in 1977, is a contest that challenges students’ ability to solve complex algorithm problems using artificial intelligence in limited time. Total of 140 teams and 420 students participated at this year’s contest.
