SNU announced last 15th that Professor Jong Gye Shin of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering (Education Award), Professor Kyoung Mu Lee of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (Scholarship Award), and Professor Yeong Gil Shin of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (Cooperation Award) were nominated as recipients of the Distinguished Professor Award 2019 of SNU College of Engineering.

The Distinguished Professor Award of the College of Engineering, established in July of 1992 and funded by the 15th College of Engineering Alumni, was created to foster active research activities and rapid advancement in industrial technology. The award is divided into three sub-awards. The education award is given to a professor who has devoted to education creatively and passionately. The scholarship award is given to a professor with outstanding academic achievements. The cooperation award is presented to a professor who has greatly contributed to the development of industrial technology.

Professor Jong Gye Shin, the recipient of the Education Award, started off as the assistant professor of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering in 1993, teaching and conducting researches on marine production engineering. Shin launched a course titled “Production Science of Ships and Offshore Plants” to help students form an understanding on engineering theories and technologies related to shipyard production. He also lectured a course called “Simulation-based Production System” to simplify shipyard production to a process-centered computational model and use it to confirm and optimize theories via simulation.

Professor Shin has produced 25 doctors and 62 masters in the field of marine production system over the last 26 years. He has also supported and facilitated a global research environment by cooperating with foreign software companies for the internationalization of education.

Professor Kyoung Mu Lee, the recipient of the Scholarship Award, joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2003 as the associate professor to make exceptional contributions in producing talented individuals and the development of the computer vision and machine learning field. He published over 140 research papers on internationally-recognized journals and at prestigious academic events. According to Google Scholar, his works have been cited over 10,000 times in the recent five years; an evidence showing his high stature in researches on computer vision and artificial intelligence. Lee already received countless awards including the Scientist and Engineer Award of This Month from the Ministry of Science and ICT last year.

Professor Lee is the founder and the president of the Korean Computer Vision Society, established in 2016. He was named the first Asian associate editor in chief of the IEEE TPAMI (Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence) and was also the advisor for Academic Press and Elsevier. Lee is currently serving as the general chair of the IEEE ICCV (International Conference on Computer Vision).

Professor Yeong Gil Shin, the recipient of the Cooperation Award, have been conducting researches and educating students on computer graphics and image processing at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering since 1992. He is particularly credited for leading the digital healthcare industry as a medical IT expert. Shin led the establishment of two on-campus technology ventures 3DII and 3D Mad (now known as Infinite Healthcare). He received the Prime Minister’s Award from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy for the development of a medical imaging technology at Infinite Healthcare.

Professor Shin already performed 82 industrial research tasks that led to the development of some core technologies. In addition, he is currently leading a task on augmented virtual as a part of the national growth project and conducting active joint-researches with Osstem Implant and Samsung Electro-mechanics.

Dean Kookheon Char of the College of Engineering commented on the award ceremony stating, “I send an applaud to the three professors who have accomplished some outstanding works despite being in a tough environment. The three recipients are role models that all have made notable contributions to the development of the Korean industry. This award also serves as a message to our society to take on challenges passionately like the three here.”
