SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on 28th that Professor Sang Woo Seo of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering will be representing Korea at the 2019 APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education (ASPIRE) ceremony.

The APEC Policy Partnership on Science Technology and Innovation (APEC PPSTI) presents this annual award to an APEC scientist under 40 that has actively participated in cooperative research activities with fellow scientists. Professor Seo will be participating at the award ceremony in July where each representative from different countries gather to vote for the final winner.

APEC ASPIRE chooses a topic of the year and delivers the prize to a scientist that has shown great achievements in that field. This year, the topic is Natural Laboratories. Professor Seo was recognized and nominated for resolving some difficult problems in biochemistry, biomedicine, and environmental purification by converging synthetic biology and systems biology relating to microorganisms.

Meanwhile, Professor Seo received his bachelor and doctoral degree at POSTECH Chemical Engineering and completed his postdoc at the University of California, San Diego. He is currently serving as a professor at SNU’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering whilst conducting active researches on synthetic biology and systems biology with a particular focus on microorganisms.
