SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced last 17th that two dual masters and PhD candidates, Ji-Eun Byun and Sang-ri Yi, from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering won the 2019 CERRA Student Recognition Award at the 13th International Conference on Applications of Statistics and Probability in Civil Engineering (ICASP13) held on June 13th.

ICASP13, hosted every four years, is the most prestigious international conference on reliability in civil and environmental engineering. This year, the conference was hosted in Korea. It was joined by 349 participants from 36 countries and consisted of 70 sessions during which 314 researches were presented. Over 60 applicants submitted an 8-page research paper and a 15-minute presentation video to compete for the Student Recognition Award. 10 young scientists were selected as the award’s recipients.

The Structural & System Reliability Group advised by Professor Junho Song of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering presented seven papers to the conference. Among which, Ji-Eun Byun and Sang-ri Yi were nominated as award winners.

Byun analyzed the reliability of civil systems from the perspective of system and presented her findings under the title of “Efficient Optimization for Multi-Objective Decision-Making on Civil Systems Using Discrete Influence Diagram.” Yi, in her paper titled “Stochastic Fragility Analysis of MDOF Systems Using Gaussian Mixture-based Equivalent Linearization Method,” accurately and efficiently calculated the fragility of MDOF systems using the Gaussian mixture-based equivalent linearization method.

Yi and Byun stated, “It was a meaningful experience to interact with experts at the ICASP13. We will strive for a safer infrastructure by developing new reliability analysis methods and skills at the Structural & System Reliability Group.”
