SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) held a signing ceremony with the Haedong Science Foundation to officially launch the “SNU Haedong Junior Startup Support Program.” Through this contract, the Haedong Science Foundation will donate 200M Korean Won and will cooperate with the College of Engineering to nurture global startup ventures.

This “SNU Haedong Junior Startup Support Program” is a strategic program to discover and support new startups that possess technical capabilities with SNU’s technical strength and support infrastructure to expand to global, unicorn companies. The program aims to vitalize the entrepreneurial culture of Korea and produce Haedong junior startups that will contribute to international economic development. It is composed of ▲discovering and raising Haedong junior startups, ▲funding the Haedong junior startups, ▲and building a Haedong startup cluster.

The program will provide step-by-step assistance to startups that are selected through the “Haedong Junior Support Plan” of the SNU Engineering Consulting Center. An initial support fund will be given to allow smooth and flexible entrepreneurial activities and a mentor will be matched to guide a gradual growth. In addition, the program will build a collaboration system where startups can exchange specialized business strategies and share profit.

Youngjae Kim, Board President of Haedong Science Foundation, said, “Startup funds will help prospective new companies to grow into stable startups. We hope that the startup cluster will be a platform for startups to exchange information and sustain steady growth.”

Dean Char stated, “The ‘SNU Haedong Junior Startup Support Program,’ funded by the Haedong Science Foundation, will play a big role in vitalizing startups at the College of Engineering. We will do our best to find and raise new Haedong junior ventures.”

Meanwhile, the participants of the ceremony hosted at the Dean Reception Room of SNU College of Engineering included Kookheon Char, Dean of SNU College of Engineering, Youngjae Kim, Board President of Haedong Science Foundation, etc.

The Haedong Science Foundation was established in 1991 by Jung-sik Kim, who is also the founder of the Daeduk Electronics, for the purpose of raising engineering talents. The “Haedong Award” was created to provide research support and foster development of industrial technologies. The award has so far supported the research fund of 282 recipients. The foundation has also funded the scholarship of 280 undergraduates and has built Haedong libraries around over 20 colleges of engineering around Korea. Last February, the foundation has donated 50B Korean Won to SNU to construct the “AI Center” for the coming Fourth Industrial Revolution.
