SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced that Professor Moo Young Han (SNU Rainwater Research Center) held a completion ceremony for the drinkable rainwater facility in rhe Solomon Islands of the South Pacific. Along with the completion ceremony, a conference addressing the drinking water problem in countries of the South Pacific was also held.

The Solomon Islands is representative of an island nation that is greatly suffering from drinking water problems despite having abundant precipitation and requires rain-water drinking facilities to solve their water problems. Following the Vanuatu Republic, this is the second time that the National Water Forum, of which Professor Moo Young is serving as Vice Chairman, has set up a rainwater drinking facility.

On the same day, a conference regarding the conversion of rainwater to drinkable water was held in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands with the National Water Forum, the Korea Water Resources Corporation, "Summit 237" and the Solomon Islands government. At the conference, Professor Moo Young Han mentioned the "Cheugugi", Korea's traditional water mangement tool as a solution to the South Pacific Nations' water problem, suggesting that the "Cheugugi Network" will be a resolution to the water problems for the South Pacific countries just as water management of the entire Joseon Dynasty was once centered around the Cheugugi.

Professor Moo Young Han promised exchange and cooperation with government officials and engineers in the Solomon Islands and has claimed to continue his activities of technological exchanges to solve the water problems in the countries of the South Pacific. Discussions also followed on how to resolve problems of water, sanitation and finding practical solutions to drinking water, the sixth of the U.N.'s sustainable development goals. Professor Moo Young Han said, "We will do our best to help the people of Solomon Islands access clean water by teaching them water management technology appropriate to the local environment."
