SNU College of Engineering, Byeongchang Kim, Jaemin Yoo Selected as Award Winners of Google PhD Fellowship Program

SNU College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on the 16th of September that Byeongchang Kim (Professor Gunhee Kim; Vision and Learning Laboratory) and Jaemin Yoo (Professor U Kang; Data Mining Laboratory), students of the Ph.D. Program in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, were selected as awardees of the Google Ph.D Fellowship Program for natural language processing and machine learning, respectively.
Launched in 2009, Google's Ph.D Fellowship program is a program that recognizes outstanding graduate students who are conducting exceptional research in various computer-related fields including algorithms, human computer interaction, machine learning, mobile computing and database management. The program has supported research for future technological development through the provision of scholarships, research mentoring and opportunities for Google internships.

This year’s awardee Byeongchang Kim, has been conducting research studies related to the use of unrefined raw
data on the web to process natural language. He has been highly acknowledged for working towards defining
new tasks and looking for ways to utilize the various types of data in the deep learning model.
Jaemin Yoo is mainly conducting machine learning research related to graphical data. He has been selected as an
awardee for his recent research in working towards increasing the utilization of pre-existing models such as the
compression and interpretation of deep learning model.
"We are pleased to see the outstanding performance of our SNU engineering students through this Google Ph.D
Fellowship program," claimed SNU and further added, "This will be the start of fostering engineering students
that will have a global influence through their talents."
