Samsung Electronics and Seoul National University Establish 'AI Joint Research Center'

Samsung Electronics and Seoul National University have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish an 'AI Joint Research Center' at Seoul National University's Global Engineering Education Center. This initiative aims to secure technological and product competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and foster talent through industry-academic collaboration.

The agreement was signed with the attendance of President Kyunghoon Chun, who serves as CTO of Samsung Electronics' DX Division and as President of Samsung Research (pictured sixth from the left), and Young-oh Kim, Dean of the College of Engineering at Seoul National University (pictured seventh from the right).

At the signing ceremony, participants included Samsung Electronics' Chief Technology Officer and President of Samsung Research, Kyunghoon Chun, along with Vice President Daehyun Kim of Samsung Research Global AI Center, Dean Young-oh Kim from Seoul National University's College of Engineering, and Professor Yu Kang, head of the AI Program in the Graduate School of Engineering at Seoul National University.

Samsung Electronics' DX Division and Seoul National University's Graduate School of Engineering AI Program have agreed to collaborate on joint research projects in the field of AI technology for the next three years at the AI Joint Research Center.

* Since the fall semester of 2020, Seoul National University has established and operated the 'AI Program' in cooperation with the Graduate School of Engineering, aiming to cultivate AI-specialized talents.

The research projects are structured around securing detailed technologies for On-Device AI and Multi-Modal AI, among others.

Samsung Electronics has incorporated various AI technologies such as Circle to Search, real-time translation, and photo assistance into products like the Galaxy S24 released earlier this year. They are expanding into product areas applying AI technology, including Bespoke AI and AI TVs.

Samsung Electronics anticipates that through collaboration with Seoul National University in the rapidly evolving field of AI, they can secure core AI technologies and enhance their product technology competitiveness.

Additionally, plans are underway to concurrently conduct recruitment activities aimed at nurturing and securing outstanding talents, including researchers at the graduate level participating in the projects.
