The College of Engineering at Seoul National University announced that it held a signing ceremony on the 3rd of this month at its Gwanak Campus in collaboration with the UK’s Lloyd’s Register Foundation, to establish a development fund for future ship safety research.
Lloyd’s Register Foundation will contribute research funding of GBP 4 million, approximately KRW 7 billion, to Seoul National University College of Engineering over the next five years. As the world’s largest classification society, Lloyd’s Register verifies compliance with ship safety regulations and supports research centers, educational programs, and environmental improvement projects worldwide through its foundation. Having donated around KRW 5 billion to Seoul National University College of Engineering over the past 15 years since 2008, Lloyd's Register Foundation will have provided a total of approximately KRW 12 billion, including this latest contribution.
This research fund will be used by a global research team led by Professor Yong-Hwan Kim from the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at Seoul National University to study ship safety technologies for the public good and to educate key personnel in this field. Universities and research institutes from the U.S., U.K., Japan, and Norway will also participate in the research.
Key figures such as President Honglim Ryu, Dean Young-oh Kim of the College of Engineering, Ruth Boumphrey, CEO of Lloyd's Register Foundation, Gareth Weir, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Seoul, and Vice Chairman Sung-An Choi of Samsung Heavy Industries attended the ceremony. The event also included the signing of an Industry-Academic Cooperation MOU between the global research team at Seoul National University and the three major Korean shipbuilders: HD Hyundai, Samsung Heavy Industries, and Hanwha Ocean. Through this collaboration, it is expected that ship safety technologies developed for public purposes will be commercialized and practically utilized by the industry.
Ruth Boumphrey, CEO of Lloyd's Register Foundation, stated, "The excellent research achievements of Seoul National University have enabled our long-term funding and a strong partnership between our institutions. We hope that this new contribution will further enhance Seoul National University's contribution to society." President Honglim Ryu responded, "We will make good use of the fund to develop groundbreaking technologies that will safeguard the future of ships."
Vice Chairman Sung-An Choi of Samsung Heavy Industries, who is also the chairman of the Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Association, said, "We will continue our partnership with Lloyd's Register, which has been a steady companion throughout the development of Korea's shipbuilding industry, and lead the future of the shipbuilding and marine industry."
