Seoul National University’s College of Engineering, in collaboration with the College of Medicine, hosted the "2024 Project Selection Ceremony and 2023 Project Presentation for Interdisciplinary Research" on September 20th at the Yang Yoon-Sun Hall in the SNU College of Medicine’s Convergence Hall.

The event aimed to foster synergy in developing innovative future medical technologies by encouraging active interdisciplinary collaboration between the engineering and medical schools. The goal was to achieve groundbreaking results that could not have been realized through traditional, independent research.

During the event, new research projects for 2024 were selected, and results from the 2023 interdisciplinary research projects were presented, followed by discussions.

Notably, a presentation by Professor Kwon Sunghoon from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Professor Park Wan-beom from the Department of Internal Medicine received special attention. Their joint research, published in the prestigious journal Nature in July, introduced a novel “ultra-Rapid Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (uRAST)” method. This technology opens new possibilities for significantly improving the survival rate of patients with sepsis, a condition with a mortality rate exceeding 40%.

Young-oh Kim, Dean of the College of Engineering, remarked, “The engineering-medical interdisciplinary research program, which has been running for 19 years since 2006, holds historical significance for creating new technological fields through joint research.” He added, “We will continue to foster an environment that brings creativity and innovation together.”
