Seoul National University’s College of Engineering announced that the ‘2024 SNU FastMRI Challenge,’ now in its fourth year, concluded successfully, with passionate participation from future engineers driving the advancement of medical technology.

Organized by Professor Jongho Lee’s research lab from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the SNU FastMRI Challenge invites undergraduate students at SNU to propose solutions using FastMRI technology, which significantly reduces MRI scan times while maintaining high-quality imaging. This is achieved by utilizing deep neural networks to generate high-quality MRI images from fewer data points. Sponsored by AIRS Medical and KLLIM Ventures, this year's competition saw participation from 261 undergraduate students across 31 departments, forming a total of 160 teams. Out of these, five teams were awarded for their outstanding performance.

Participants focused on developing innovative algorithms in medical image processing and analysis using artificial intelligence (AI) to implement FastMRI technology. The competition highlighted critical technical issues such as MRI image restoration, noise reduction, and resolution enhancement, with participants employing various datasets in fierce competition. This year’s challenge centered on core technologies in MRI image processing, and participants were praised for achieving significant technical advancements based on their innovative ideas.

The winning team, comprised of Hyunwoo Kim (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Yoosuk Han (Department of Biosystems Engineering), was lauded for developing a technology expected to be utilized in real-world medical settings. Second and third places went to Jaeyoung Kim and Jaehyuk Koo (both from the Department of Plant Science), and Jihoon Kim (Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering) and Sungjae Han (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering), respectively. The fourth-place team included Jungmin Park and Jinsu Kim (both from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering), while Jaewon Jang (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Chanjin Kim (Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering) took fifth place.

Held annually over six weeks during the summer at Seoul National University, the ‘SNU FastMRI Challenge’ has attracted around 800 participants to date, becoming a platform where aspiring engineers can showcase their skills based on a spirit of innovation and challenge. Professor Jongho Lee commented, "It was impressive to see students dedicating themselves to the development of FastMRI technology over 50 days during their summer break. I look forward to seeing how these next-generation engineers use this competition as a stepping stone to make significant contributions to the advancement of medical imaging technology.“

A representative from Seoul National University’s College of Engineering added, "The 5th MRI Challenge, which will be held next year in an even more advanced format, is expected to further accelerate innovation in the field of medical imaging technology. We will continue to provide opportunities for students to take on challenges, while also creating platforms for researchers to share and exchange the latest technologies.“
