The College of Engineering at Seoul National University announced that Professor Do Kyun Kim from the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering was selected as the Best Paper Award winner at the 1st International Conference on Engineering Structures (ICES 2024).

Sponsored and organized by Engineering Structures (Impact Factor: 5.6), which is a prestigious journal in the field of structural engineering, ICES 2024, held in Guangzhou, China, from November 8-11, 2024. provided a global forum for structural engineering and mechanics experts - including naval, civil, mechanical, and aerospace disciplines—to exchange the latest research insights and foster collaboration.

At the conference, Prof. Do Kyun Kim was honored with the Best Paper Award for his paper 'Next-Generation Structural Insights: Advanced Empirical Models for Ultimate Compressive Strength of Ships and Offshore Plates'. This study received notable recognition for introducing the historical and technical advances of design formulas related to the ultimate compressive strength of plate elements over the past 150 years while providing critical insights into future advancements. The award also reflected his long-standing collaboration with distinguished scholars from the University of Strathclyde (UK), Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Norway), Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal), and Sabanci University (Türkiye), further underscoring the international significance of the research.

In addition, Researcher Yi Eun Kim (an integrated master’s and doctoral program candidate in the Class of 2023 from the same department and a member of Ocean & Shore Technology (OST) Research Group undersupervision of Prof. Kim, won the Best Student Paper Award at ICES 2024 for her work titled 'Development of Design Formula and Analysis of Ultimate Strength Behavior of Curved Plates considering Welding Residual Stress'. Funded by Samsung Heavy Industries, her research proposed a groundbreaking empirical design formula to predict the effects of welding residual stress on the ultimate compressive strength of curved plate elements.

Professor Kim expressed gratitude, stating, “I dedicate this honor to everyone who has supported and guided me. Special thanks to SNU’s College of Engineering and the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering for their invaluable support through the International Networking Support Funding for Newly Appointed Faculty.”

Researcher Yi Eun Kim reflected on her accomplishment: "It is a tremendous honor to receive this prestigious award. I deeply thank my advisor and colleagues for their unwavering support. I am committed to continuing as a researcher dedicated to bridging academic achievements with practical applications for advancing the Smart Ocean Mobility (including Ships, Offshore and Oil/Gas) industries.”

Professor Do Kyun Kim specializes in the safety assessment of ocean mobility structures, including experimental and numerical analyses of structures damaged by collision, grounding, fire, corrosion, and explosions. His international research experience includes faculty positions at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Malaysia, and Newcastle University, UK. Recently, he has been focusing on digitalization techniques leveraging artificial intelligence and data-driven methodologies to predict the ultimate strength and enable real-time condition assessment of structural systems. His work also includes research into liquefied gas cargo containment technologies to support global decarbonization efforts. Researcher Yi Eun Kim’s primary research interests lie in limit-state-based structural safety assessments. She is actively developing practical and innovative methods to enhance the safety of ocean mobilities.
