Seoul National University R&DB Foundation and the digital currency community ‘Bitmobick (BTCMOBICK)’ recently held an inauguration ceremony for a rainwater drinking facility at Lilika Community High School in Honiara, the capital of the Solomon Islands.

Despite abundant rainfall, the Solomon Islands faces severe drinking water shortages, making it an urgent necessity to distribute facilities that convert rainwater into potable water. Recognizing this need, SNU R&DB Foundation and Bitmobick Community collaborated to provide clean drinking water to students in remote areas where water and electricity supply are challenging. As part of this effort, they signed a research agreement on January 13 for the ‘Solomon Islands Rainwater Drinking Project.’

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Professor Hyunju Park from SNU R&DB Foundation, Jaeyeon Ryu, CEO of Bitmobick Community, and Jung-A Koo, CEO of Bitmobick Jeonju Mobick Hall. Notably, the event was graced by the presence of Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, who expressed gratitude by stating, “Thanks to this collaborative project, students and local residents can now access safe drinking water, allowing them to lead healthier lives.”

Professor Hyunju Park explained the significance of the event, stating, “This project serves as a model case of industry-academia cooperation, demonstrating how SNU’s innovative rainwater drinking technology and digital currency’s commitment to social responsibility can create synergy and yield meaningful results.” She added, “It is rewarding to know that this initiative has established a foundation where students in the Solomon Islands can study and grow in an environment where clean drinking water is always available.”

Jaeyeon Ryu, CEO of Bitmobick Community, shared his thoughts: “It is truly gratifying to use digital currency as a meaningful tool for social value creation through collaboration with Seoul National University.” He further stated, “As a community that shares the vision and dedication of Otamin Oh, the creator of Bitmobick, we plan to continue working with SNU to bring hope to communities around the world struggling with clean water shortages.”

The newly installed rainwater drinking facility at Lilika Community High School produces hygienic water that meets World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water standards without any chemical treatment. Additionally, by integrating solar power generation, the system ensures a stable water supply even in areas with limited electricity, making it a groundbreaking technology optimized for the climate and geographical conditions of the Solomon Islands. The facility is based on years of research by Professor Mooyoung Han’s team at SNU’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and SNU Rainwater Research Center, whose outstanding technology has already been proven in solving drinking water issues in developing countries.

The ‘Solomon Islands Rainwater Drinking Project’ was funded by SNU’s research support program and initiated as part of Bitmobick Community’s mission to reinvest digital currency profits into society. Moving forward, both organizations plan to expand their efforts to support rainwater drinking facilities in remote schools throughout the Solomon Islands.
