Seoul National University College of Engineering (Dean Byoungho Lee) announced on October 22 that five professors were selected as recipients of the 2021 Shinyang Engineering Academy Award.

The awardees selected this year are Professor Young-Sang Kwon of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Professor Han Ho Song of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Professor Ki Tae Nam of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor Jae Wook Lee of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and Professor Won Bo Lee of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

“These are the professors who have worked tirelessly to raise the status of Korean engineering not just within Seoul National University's College of Engineering, but on a world-wide scale. At a time where innovation is most needed, I hope that they will contribute further for achieving the shared mission of developing the SNU College of Engineering into a world-leading university,” said the College of Engineering Dean, Byoungho Lee, as he praised the hard work of the winners and expressed his congratulations.

Meanwhile, the Shinyang Engineering Academy Award is a reward system established by the donations made by Seok-gyu Chung, the late chairman of the Shinyang Cultural Foundation, and in order to promote education and research activities, is given to an individual with exceptional achievements amongst young professors under the age of 49 who are being promoted to the position of professors or associate professors. It has been awarded since 2005 and marks its 17th anniversary this year.

□ Achievements

○ Professor Young-Sang Kwon of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has established the 'Smart Urban Engineering Major' curriculum in February 2019, which is an urban space-based future convergence study in preparation for artificial intelligence, big data, and the 4th industrial revolution and in March 2019, participated in the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 'Smart City Innovative Talent Development Project' proposal contest and amongst fierce competition, was selected, securing a budget of about 1.5 billion won to support his graduate students. In addition, after he took office, he conducted a total of 5 undergraduate and 9 graduate course lectures while he also conducted a joint lecture with The University of Tokyo on the topics of smart city and regional innovation.

○ Professor Han Ho Song of the Department of Mechanical Engineering participated in the 2020 University Education Innovation Support Project of the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), in which professors of 31 lecture classes from 16 colleges participated for the 'optimization of online classes' due to COVID-19, and among the course optimization models, the flop learning method has been actively applied to classes. The developed teaching method was recommended as an excellent case by the CTL, and was introduced as a “method for effective non-face-to-face lecture management” through the SNUON YouTube channel. In addition, by the votes of all the graduates of the year, it was also selected as the first recipient of the “Education Award”, which has been implemented by the Department of Mechanical Engineering since 2017.

○ Professor Ki Tae Nam of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering has published a total of 74 SCI-level research papers and 85 Korean and international academic presentations in the field of biomimetic new material development technology overr the past 3 years, and most of his presented papers have been published in some of the most well-renown journals in the field of engineering, including the sister journals of Nature, ACS Publications, Advanced Materials, and Angewandte Chemie. Biomimetic new material development technology was selected as one of the top 10 nanotechnology of 2017 and 2018 by the Korea Nanotechnology Research Society and has received many awards, including the Pioneering Scientist Award (2011), National Research and Development Top 100 Excellency Award (2017), and the Young Scientist Award (Presidential Award) (2017).

○ Professor Jae Wook Lee of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering has published a total of 30 SCI-level papers and presented at 15 academic conferences in the field of computer architecture and computer systems over the past 5 years, and most of his papers have been published by some of the most prestigious conferences in the field of computer architecture and systems including ACM/IEEE ISCA, ACM ASPLOS, IEEE/ACM MICRO, USENIX ATC, USENIX FAST, IEEE HPCA. In 2017, he was awarded the Most Frequently Cited Pater Award at the IEEE VLSI Symposium, the topmost conference in the field of semiconductor design.

○ Professor Won Bo Lee of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering has published 59 SCI-level papers and presented in 80 academic conferences in the fields of complex fluid theory, (solid) electrolyte, and catalyst process theory over the past 3 years, and most of his papers have been published in some of the most prestigious journals in the field of complex fluid theory, electrolytes and catalytic process theory including Adv. Energy Mater., Science Advances, ACS Catalysis, Chem. Mater. and Chem. Eng. Published by J. In 2017, he was awarded the New Academic Award from the Korean Society of Rheology for his contribution to the development of polymer theory and technology.
