Seoul National University College of Engineering announced that on March 10, it signed an industry-academia collaboration agreement with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) at SNU’s Gwanak Campus. The agreement aims to establish a long-term, systematic partnership and foster continued cooperation across various fields in the shipbuilding and related industries.
The Samsung Heavy Industries-Seoul National University (SHI-SNU) Industry-Academia Collaboration, which began in 2016, marks its 10th year this year. Through this renewed agreement, both institutions will collaborate over the next five years to acquire cutting-edge shipbuilding and offshore technology. Additionally, they will conduct joint research and industry-academia projects in diverse fields, including shipbuilding, automation, process engineering, nuclear power, and artificial intelligence (AI). The partnership will also focus on talent acquisition, education, and employee training programs, further strengthening their cooperation in these areas.
The signing ceremony was attended by Young-oh Kim, Dean of SNU College of Engineering; Shin Hyung Rhee, Chair of the Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering at SNU; Seong An Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries; and Dong Yeon Lee, Executive Vice President of Samsung Heavy Industries.
Dean Young-oh Kim expressed his expectations for the collaboration, stating, “Through this agreement, we hope to create a leading case of technological convergence within the shipbuilding platform.” Vice Chairman Seong An Choi responded, “I hope that our institutions will continue this industry-academia collaboration for 20 or even 30 more years, paving the way for a new leap into the future.”
