Seoul National University announced that Professor Kisuk Kang of the College of Engineering’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering has recently been appointed Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society (JACS), one of the most prestigious scientific journals in the field of chemistry.

Over the next ten years, Professor Kang will serve as an editorial board member for JACS, overseeing the review and editorial processes for key areas including physical chemistry, energy storage, and secondary batteries.

Published by the American Chemical Society (ACS) since 1879, JACS is the world’s most prestigious chemistry journal, boasting a history of over 140 years and playing a leading role in advancing both chemical theory and technology. It is consistently one of the most cited journals among chemists worldwide and features pioneering research across all fields of chemistry—including physical, organic, inorganic, and biological chemistry.

Notably, many of the studies published in JACS have led to Nobel Prizes in Chemistry. A prime example is Charles Pedersen, the 1987 Nobel laureate born in Busan, who published his groundbreaking research on crown ether synthesis in JACS—a contribution that earned him the Nobel Prize.

As such, the appointment of a Korean scholar to the editorial board of JACS is being hailed as a major milestone, demonstrating the global recognition of Korea’s scientific excellence and leadership.

Professor Kang is a world-renowned scholar in the fields of physical chemistry and electrochemistry, particularly known for his work on lithium-ion batteries, all-solid-state batteries, and energy storage materials. Since 2020, he has also served as a Reviewing Editor for the international journal Science, contributing to major academic decisions in the global scientific community.

An official from SNU stated, “This appointment not only reflects Professor Kang’s outstanding research achievements, but also symbolizes the world-class level of Korea’s research in energy materials and chemistry. We will continue to support our scientists in playing leading roles in the global academic ecosystem.”
