SNU Mechanical Engineering Professor Wontae Hwang Receives Ministerial Commendation at the 2025 Machinery Day

Prof. Wontae Hwang of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Seoul National University (SNU) has received a Commendation from the Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy in recognition of his contributions to industry–academia–research collaboration, presented in conjunction with the 2025 Machinery Day.

Drawing on his many years of experience at Sandia National Laboratories in the United States and at the global industrial company General Electric (GE), Prof. Hwang has played a significant role in advancing the localization of power-generation gas turbines and advanced aircraft jet engines in Korea.

In addition, he has contributed to the creation of intellectual property in the mechanical engineering and machinery industry through multiple patent registrations, and has made substantial contributions to the advancement of research and education in the field through the publication of numerous SCI-indexed journal papers and active participation in international academic conferences.

Machinery Day, established on November 13, 2002, is a commemorative day designated to reflect on the future direction of the machinery industry and to enhance the pride of professionals working in the field. Each year, representatives from industry, academia, and research institutions come together to honor individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the machinery industry.
