Seoul National University College of Engineering announced that Dr. Hyeongyeop Shin, a graduate of the Department of Architecture & Architectural Engineering, has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU), a national university in Taiwan, and will begin his faculty appointment in 2026.

NYCU is ranked among the top three engineering universities in Taiwan, and this marks the first time that a PhD graduate of the SNU College of Engineering has been appointed as a faculty member at one of Taiwan’s top-three universities.

Dr. Shin earned his bachelor’s degree in architecture & Architectural Engineering from Seoul National University and went on to complete both his master’s and doctoral degrees at SNU under the supervision of Prof. Hyun-Koo Kang, following a fully domestic academic training path. He later served as a lecturer at the SNU College of Engineering, where he developed and taught the course “Fundamental Mathematics and Programming for Machine Learning” in both Korean- and English-taught versions over the past two years. Until recently, he was a postdoctoral researcher at the SNU Engineering Research Institute.

Dr. Shin’s primary research areas include the design, analysis, and construction technologies of prestressed concrete structures and composite structures. He has focused on developing HDPE-coated tendon technologies to enhance the durability of post-tensioning systems used in nuclear containment buildings, while also improving the convenience of in-service inspection.

In addition, he has achieved notable international research outcomes in studies on shear design of prestressed concrete structures and the development of novel composite beam systems utilizing angled shear connectors. His work has contributed to obtaining ICC-ES certification and has been selected as a “Paper of the Month” by an editor of an American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) journal. His research has also been published in a number of leading international journals, including ACI Structural Journal, ASCE Journal of Structural Engineering, PCI Journal, and PTI Journal, where its academic value has been widely recognized.

Dr. Shin commented, “Thanks to the strong support of the SNU College of Engineering and the guidance of my professors, I have been able to grow into a researcher capable of contributing to the international academic community. I will continue to dedicate myself to advancing technological innovation for safe and economical buildings and nuclear structures, while pursuing competitive and impactful research.”
