Seoul National University's College of Engineering (Dean Kookheon Char) announced on August 27 (Friday) that the research team led by Professor U Kang of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering received the Best Research Paper Award at KDD 2021, the best international conference in data mining and artificial intelligence.

This award was achieved by developing a core technology that efficiently analyzes arbitrary time ranges in high-dimensional tensor data.

The KDD 2021 Best Research Paper Award is given to only one paper, and the KDD Best Research Paper Award is considered the highest honor in its field. KDD has awarded the Best Research Paper 25 times from 1997 to this year, and Professor U Kang's research team represented the first Korean University to win the award.

The award-winning thesis “Fast and Memory-Efficient Tucker Decomposition for Answering Diverse Time Range Queries” was written by Professor U Kang and Ph.D. student Jun-gi Jang, and presented the Zoom-Tucker technique, a technology that efficiently finds patterns in a specific time period from high-dimensional tensor data through Tucker decomposition.

The technology obtained through this research is expected to be used for various AI applications in the future as it can be used for pattern analysis of time series data.
